Sugar Free Frosting Recipe Ingredients

When you’re making a claim that something won’t raise blood sugar, is safe for diabetics, and great for those on a Keto diet, your ingredients better align perfectly with those claims.

Palm Shortening (or Butter), softened

It’s interesting that over the last 40 years butter has gotten a bad name and for absolutely no good reason. If you want to know the history of why saturated fat has been vilified, check out this history of saturated fat in America.

Zero Sugar Chocolate Sauce

The inclusion of a high-quality zero sugar chocolate sauce is crucial for adding that rich, chocolatey goodness without compromising blood sugar levels. This sauce is a staple for anyone looking to enjoy a decadent chocolate treat while maintaining a state of ketosis.

Allulose

Allulose, a sweetener that has gained popularity within the ketogenic community, mimics the taste and texture of sugar without the usual blood sugar spike. If you’re unfamiliar with Allulose, check out this article related to everything you need to know about Allulose.

Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder is made by crushing cocoa beans and removing the fat or cocoa butter. There are loads of health benefits from consuming cocoa powder. For example, cocoa powder is high in polyphenols, may improve nitric oxide levels, and may improve mood.

Milk or Cream

Similar to the butter aspect of (has gotten a bad name through misrepresentation), heavy cream can provide incredible flavor and the right balance of texture to nearly any recipe.

Keto Chocolate Icing

Ever notice words that you think have the same meaning actually have a slightly different meaning?

What is the difference between icing and frosting?

Icing is thinner than frosting. However, there’s an additional term (or word) used and that’s a glaze. A glaze is even thinner than icing. So in all it goes in order of thickness: Frosting > Icing > Glaze.

Icing is typically made with sugar (powdered) and some type of liquid, usually water or milk. In this recipe, the “sugar” is derived from an alternative sweetener.

Icing can be drizzled or spread. Also: Icing has more of a shine and smoother consistency than frosting.

Keto Recipe Directions to make Frosting

  1. Place the shortening/butter in a medium mixing bowl or in the bowl of a stand mixer. If using a stand mixer, use the paddle attachment. If not, use a hand mixer.
  2. Beat the shortening/butter for about 2 minutes, scraping the sides occasionally, until soft and fluffy.
  3. Add the chocolate sauce, Allulose, and cocoa powder. Continue to whip until well incorporated.
  4. Add milk/cream and whip until lightened and fluffy, another minute or two, scraping the sides as needs to get a smooth frosting.
  5. This frosting is shelf-stable and can be stored at room temp for a week in a tightly sealed container (or in the fridge for up to 6 months). If you live in a very warm climate, you should store in the fridge. Bring to room temp before using, stirring before use.

Any unsweetened cocoa powder would work well here, even Hershey's. Just be sure that the only ingredient is cocoa powder, no added sweeteners.
